What is IP68 certification?
IP stands for “ingress protection” and nowadays see our premium end Smartphones are labeled with IP ratings which are assigned by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as per a devices ability to withstand the ingress of elements such as water, dust and dirt. Any device before provided with a particular rating is subjected to laboratory tests while the device is put on standby mode.

ip68Ip68 certified Phones

6 – is the international rating for an IP68 device for its dust resistance. Samsung Gear S2, iPhone 7 as well as Samsung Galaxy S7 were labelled with 6 rating in this section.
8 – is the international rating for an IP68 device for its resistance against water. iPhone 7 scored 7 rating in this case while as Samsung Galaxy S7, Gear S2 managed to get 8 rating. IP68 rated Smartphone / Smartwatch can be taken underwater for 30 minutes at depths of up to 1.5m while as in case of IP67, only 1 meter depth can be attained for the same time.

What does this mean practically?

In real life, both these ratings will only keep your Smartphone safe from accidental drops. Suppose you dropped your Smartphone in a toilet or bathtub accidentally, it will not be affected. But you need to be clear that your Smartphone cannot withstand underwater photography in the swimming pool. If you want your Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 to not get killed, you better refrain from such activities.

Last year Apple posted a detailed advisory for its Apple Watch and same set of advice will follow up for iPhone 7 too. Apple stated “ Submerging your Apple Watch isn’t recommended. Water resistance isn’t a permanent condition, and your Apple Watch can’t be rechecked or resealed for water resistance. The following may affect the water resistance of your Apple Watch and should be avoided:

  • Dropping your Apple Watch or subjecting it to other impacts.
  • Submerging your Apple Watch in water for long periods of time.
  • Swimming or bathing with your Apple Watch.
  • Exposing your Apple Watch to pressurized water or garden hose, for example showering, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, jet skiing, and so on.
  • Wearing your Apple Watch in a sauna or steam room.”

Similar advice was posted by Sony back in 2015 after releasing IP68 rated devices or handsets which reads “Remember not to use the device underwater,” the firm said. “The IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode, so you should not use the device underwater, such as taking pictures.”

Now it must be pretty clear to you that IP68 rating does not mean that you can go scuba diving while wearing device of such standard. Extreme water-sport activities can be done when your Smart-phone is encased in an out of the certified protective case which guarantees no water damage, it such conditions you are willing to face.

Samsung last year astonished everyone by launching Samsung Galaxy S5. It is worth to note that, the Samsung S5 was launched with great excitement. The Samsung S5 introduced water-resistant technology, dust tight technology, which then created a buzz and many other manufacturer pulled this technology on their respective Smartphone. They introduced us the word ‘IP67 certification’ which means dust tight. IP certification allows device to submerge deep in 3.2-feet of water for complete 30-minutes. Last year, Samsung highlighted this point for promotion to gain more and more audience. The water-resistant trend then created a buzz among all Smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S6

According to the recent report of Samsung, the Korean giant are trying to increase profit margin. The upcoming product of Samsung Galaxy S6 will not have IP certification. Is this true? Yes, this time Samsung will be not setting IP certification on non-Active models. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which is known to be a sibling of Samsung S6 will also be non-water resistant.
This decision of eliminating water-resistance technology did disappointed few users. But this alleged move was not that surprising! According to the sales report Samsung Galaxy S5 gave grave fall and fall short with expectations. With this product, Samsung noted low profit. The loss was more as compared to their sales figure of past two years!

Samsung Galaxy s5 is the most up to date Smartphone from the Samsung s series so far. Besides its basic functions like 2G and 3G compatibility it also supports 4G LTE that is unbelievable. It has got many other amazing features like real fingerprint scanner which is PayPal certified, it has got the most latest Gorilla Glass 3 protection and a high quality 16 MP camera which is amazing. It has got loads of filters to apply on your photos and lot of additional camera features like smile detection, image stabilization, etc.

Despite all these features are common in high end Smartphone’s Samsung has made possible to make it water and dust resistant without even increasing an inch of dimension. It has been certified IP67 rating by IEC (International Electro technical Commission). You might be wondering what does IP67 mean, let me make it clear to you. I means Ingress, P means Protection, 6 means that Galaxy s5 is dust resistant and 7 means your Samsung Galaxy can stand for 30 minutes into water depth of 1 metre. Below 1 metre it will get surely damaged due to increased water pressure.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Keeping water proof display isn’t a big deal but designing waterproof ports is very much challenging. At the bottom end there is a plastic gasket covering USB ports which protects your Smartphone from water. Whenever you remove USB cable your Galaxy s5 always notifies you to put on the water proof gasket tightly.
Talking about the back of your Samsung Galaxy s% it is removable and might risk your Smartphone if kept loose. But if placed properly Samsung has brilliantly embedded a plastic gasket which keeps your sim card, battery and other essential parts safely surrounded.

You don’t need to feel too much relaxed about the waterproof feature of your Smartphone. IP67 rating doesn’t mean you can keep your Galaxy s5 in swim suit and start swimming or use it while bathing. You still need to take care of you Smartphone and keep it in dry place because it has been proven very risky if your Smartphone went deeper than 1 metre. Unfortunately your Samsung Galaxy s5 is not 100% water proof, it has got many risks with it. You might know what bad harm does a Smartphone get if it falls in water.

If you don’t know let me tell you if your Samsung Galaxy s5 fell in a swimming pool consequences can be very bad. It will rust your Smartphone’s circuit board and eventually cause death of it or disable your slots or charging ports, etc. So it’s very essential to keep your Galaxy s5 safe despite of its waterproofing feature.

This waterproofing feature will be surely helpful to you if your Smartphone falls in water trouble but you don’t have to risk your Smartphone for playing with this feature. It’s very risky and we are sure that you value your money more than us because it’s your money. We don’t want you to spend on repairing. Prevention is always the best option.
