The following step-by-step tutorial will help you to upgrade your Sony Xperia ZR to Android 4.4 KitKat. Apart from being the new hot custom ROM that everyone wants, it’s very useful. Even if you don’t take advantage of functions such as Screen recording or cloud printing directly from your gallery, you still want to consider installing it, since it uses 14% less charge of your battery.
The following tutorial should only be used for this specific model. We take no responsibility if any damage is done to your phone throughout the process. Before you start: make sure that your battery has at least 70% charge, but do it with full charge, just to make sure.
Are you ready? Let’s begin then:
Step 1 – Save everything from your phone: contacts, photos, everything. Although it is unlikely that something unexpected will happen, it is better to be ready for such a case.
Step 2 – Enable USB Debugging on your phone. You also want to download all necessary USB drivers for your phone on your computer, and has the latest ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your phone.
Step 3 – Download CyanogenMod11 Nightly Build For Sony Xperia ZR and GApps package for Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROMs. Both are needed, since otherwise you will have no Google applications on your phone. Donwload the CyanogenMod 11 file here, and the GApps pack can be found here. Before you proceed make sure you are downloading the Mod designed for your device. Every device has it’s own build designed specifically for that phone, and you don’t want any other build on your phone except your own.
Step 4 – Connect your phone to your computer. Copy the files to either your internal or external storage units.
Step 5 – Disconnect your phone.
Step 6 – Reboot your phone to Custom Recovery mode. To do this on the Xperia ZR, you need to press the Volume Up button a few times while it’s booting. Once you see the screen, navigate with the Volume buttons and select with the Power button.
Step 7 – Do a Nandroid Backup. Give yourself a chance to back out later if you don’t enjoy the experience.
Step 8 –You have to do a data wiping. Select data wiping/factory reset. After it’s done, go back to the main menu, and select wipe cache partition. After that’s done, navigate to advanced options and select Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Step 9 – When it’s done, select install zip from SD card. Select the CyanogenMod file first. After it’s completed, do the same thing with the GApps file.
Step 10 – After you’ve finished, simply go to the main menu, and Reboot your system.
Step 11 – Congratulations! You now have Android 4.4 KitKat on your Sony Xperia ZR. Enjoy.
