The following step-by-step tutorial will help you to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy S3 to Android 4.4 KitKat. It’s indeed very useful: screen recording and cloud printing directly from your gallery are added among others, and it uses 14% less charge from your battery.

The following tutorial should only be used for this specific model. We take no responsibility if any damage is done to your phone throughout the process. However, if you end up following this tutorial and going through with the process, it is possible to revert back to your original ROM. If you ask me, it’s worth the risk, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Before you start: make sure that your battery has at least 60% charge.

Everything ready? Decision made? Let’s roll:

Step 1 – In case this is your first time doing this: Backup everything on your computer! The process involves wiping your memory card clean, and you will lose everything. Save text messages, internet connection settings, everything. Use additional apps to get it done if necessary.

Step 2 – Enable USB Debugging on your phone, otherwise you can’t copy the .zip files we will be working with on your phone. The USB drivers for your phone have to be up-to-date on your computer, and be sure you have the latest CWM Recovery.

Step 3 – Download CyanogenMod11 Nightly Build For Samsung Galaxy S3 and GApps package for Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROMs. Download the CyanogenMod 11 file here, and the GApps pack can be found here. Only use the CynanogenMod file that was designed to be used on your model.

Step 4 – Connect your phone to your computer. Copy the files to the phone’s internal storage unit. Don’t extract the .zip files to your computer.

Step 5 – Disconnect your phone.

Step 6 – Reboot your phone to Custom Recovery mode. To do this on the Galaxy S3, you need to press and hold the Volume Up button, the Home button and the Power button at the same time.

Step 7 – Navigate with your Volume buttons and do a Nandroid Backup. This will create a backup of your current ROM, giving you the option of going back to using your previous ROM.

Step 8 –Now it’s time for the factory reset (if you’re already using a previous version of CyanogenMod, you may skip this step). Select data wiping/factory reset.

Step 9 – When it’s done, select install zip from SD card. Navigate to the directory where you copied the .zip files, and select the CyanogenMod file first. After it’s completed, select the GApps file.

Step 10 – After you’ve finished, simply go to the main menu, and do a normal reboot.

Step 11 – Congratulations, you did it! You have Android 4.4 on your Samsung Galaxy S3. Enjoy!

You don’t have a Samsung Galaxy S3, but you still want to upgrade to Android 4.4? Keep searching this site, since we’ll be bringing you more tutorials on how to install CyanogenMod 11 on different devices.
