Nokia Lumia 1520 Big Bad Boy Phablet Review

Nokia came with big bang some time ago literally, with the huge Phablet, the Nokia Lumia 1520. Nokia has for the first time released a device with the best ever available hardware and worked hard on making a Lumia device to pack a punch, literally. It has the specs of a top end Android flagship model and yet the simplicity of Windows Phone in Full HD and a humongous screen. Add to that another killer camera on it and we have a mean Windows machine on our hands. This phone took one helluva long time to reach us for a review, and now that it is finally here, we are just unable to keep our hands off it, or shall we say in our hands? (Yes it’s a joke)

Nokia Lumia 1520

Body & Design:

Nokia didn’t really spend a big time designing this phone. It has used the same design concept of the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 put together and stretches the total size to accommodate the big screen. The body is a nice matte finish polycarbonate unibody design concept where the humungous battery is inside the body and cannot be removed. But other than that there is everything that a windows phone has like the 3 capacitive touch buttons in front and the volume rocker, power button and camera button on the right edge of the device.

The display on this device is the most important part of what makes this device special. It has a nice huge 6” IPS LCD Full HD display with resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 367 ppi. This is in total competition with other Android phablets out there in the market like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Mega series, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and many others. The display has been named as the best sunlight readability display and it uses the ClearBlack technology of Nokia making the display much sharper than its competitors. Also the 6” huge screen means it’s perfect or gaming and movies which is equally well supported by its big battery.

The hardware on this device is just top notch. It has a Snapdragon 800 whirring inside it at 2.2 GHz coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU for graphics. This means that there are absolutely no shortcomings in terms of horsepower for this device. It is capable of HD gaming, heavy apps and lots of multitasking with complete ease. The best part is that it is well supported by a light OS for these amazing specs, the free flow functionality will be of complete abundance in the Lumia 1520.

Operating System:

Microsoft has come up with a new version of Windows Phone 8 which is termed a “Bittersweet Shimmer” and named Windows Phone 8 ‘Black’ on the system. Technically it has been termed as GDR3 update by the technical people in short. This update has added much new functionality to the OS as well as cleared out many bugs which were present in the system as well. Some new features include a whole new camera app termed as Nokia Camera, a drive mode, some many small technical and feature changes and most important of all, a new glance screen. We will come to all that later. But with the new update, Windows Phone 8 now supports quad core processors, high amount of RAM, huge displays and Full HD support.

The camera on this device is just epic. It does not match with the 41 MP shooter on the Lumia 1020 but it is the next best thing. The camera on the Lumia 1520 is a 20 MP PureView camera with Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS). This is amazing for a camera as it comes with Carl Zeiss optics and a 6th sensor for amazing low light photography. And when it comes to cameras, you can never beat the Nokias at it since they have the best cameras. Also now with the new version of Windows Phone 8, Nokia has done away with the concept of lenses and different apps for the camera and has bundled everything up in a new app called Nokia Camera. This app helps you choose the lenses as well as the settings of the camera can be accessed directly from here if you want to fiddle with your camera. Along with the amazing stills, the camera can also record Full HD videos while the 1.2 MP front camera can shoot videos of up to 720p HD videos.

On the memory front the Lumia 1520 comes completely loaded with 32 GB of onboard storage. Considering that you will be using this device for a lot of multimedia viewing and also for many apps and games, so the huge amount of memory is provided so you can store your media files and games and apps on it as much as you want. Also if you happen to fall short of even that storage space, then there is a provision to increase the storage using a memory card of up to 64 GB. So you can be sure to never to run out of memory. Also the device comes packing with 2 GB of RAM which helps in smooth functionality of the system, support for many heavy games, and most of all, loads of multitasking on offer.

The device comes with a 3400 mAh battery which is really huge. Nokia claims that the battery on this device lasts 25 hours on 3G which means that an average user can use this one for up to 2 days on a single charge while a heavy user can use this device with ease for a single day without worrying about running to a charger. We haven’t yet conducted the battery endurance test, but we will soon, so stay tuned for that.

Now coming to the features, phone is pretty much feature packed. It comes loaded with all the features of Windows Phone 8, as well an amazing camera on it. A huge Full HD screen with amazing viewing angles and also the great horsepower under the hood make it a mean machine. Add to it a huge battery to power the device for long hours and you have a perfect companion. But not to be forgotten that even with all that, Windows still lacks stuff compared to iOS and Android, but it is getting there slowly and it is just a matter of time until that happens. But still, the new Nokia Camera app, the storyline feature, where you can make your photos, tell the story using HERE Maps, and the new Driving mode are some amazing features which add new zest to Windows Phone OS. Also with Full HD display and big screen support, Windows has also added the feature of a new column of live tiles. This means now you can do more on the same screen.

So overall, if you are a fan of huge screen devices and Windows Phone, then you have correctly found your partner in the Nokia Lumia 1520 with its amazing display, specs and battery and this phone surely gives the big screen Androids a true run for their money.
