It was way back in late 2013 whence the CTIA had set new standards of unlocking, and now all top five carriers in America will start implementing these unlocking procedures for all the Smartphones, tablets and other devices sold through them. Once the phone is paid off the customers will be able to get it unlocked and the process will be much easier for the new phones.
All the top carrier operators in the United States viz. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular will adopt these unlocking standards with effect from 11 February, 2015.
There is a special provision for the military personnel, the military personnel getting their new phones can have their phones unlocked with the presentation of the deployment orders, and the military personnel can have it irrespective of the payment position.
All the post-paid devices qualify for unlocking as soon as the payments are effected for the device, or at the culmination of the service contract. Whereas the pre-paid devices will qualify within one year of the activation, for unlocking.
This service of unlocking will be extended to the current customers free of cost, while for the non-customers and the existing former customers the service shall be made available at a reasonably nominal cost. The only tagline for this is that the device must be fully paid and the same should not be associated with any fraudulent activity.
The Master Subsidy Lock ( MSL ) are those made before February 2015 need to have the MSL code from the carrier to overcome the restriction. The other type of devices DSU i.e. Domestic SIM Unlock-capable that are made after February 2015 will be able to get unlock command from the carrier. Most of the DSU type devices shall be launched from February onwards.
It is still not very clear how all these carriers will implement these standards now.
